Many supplements can be found in the market today, and the number of supplements is growing. It is effortless for you to get overwhelmed when you see so many different supplements. Even though supplements are good for you, some can have many adverse effects and side effects. You might hear things about how everyone needs to take supplements. Do not fall into any marketing gimmicks and research about every supplement so that you can make a good and informed decision for yourself. 

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for your body, and it has a lot of benefits. Vitamin D is what promotes the absorption of calcium into your bones. You must get the right amount of calcium to prevent diseases like osteoporosis. Vitamin D is a prevalent supplement because people cannot get enough of vitamin D from just foods, and we must supplement it from other sources. When we spend time in the sun, then our skin produces vitamin D. Still, because more and more people are staying indoors and people are using sunscreens, people are not getting enough vitamin D. Because of this, supplements are becoming very common.  

If you consume too much vitamin D, then there can be a lot of problems. Too much vitamin D can cause excessive calcium absorption, leading to mood disorders, muscle pain, and abdominal pain. Too much vitamin D is that you can get kidney stones and get a heart attack or a stroke. Before you take any supplements, make sure that you have foods high in vitamin D. You can have mushrooms, salmon, tuna, etc. 

St. John’s Wort

This is a plant that is used in capsules or consumed as tea. The reasons for this are anxiety, mild depression, and sleep disorders. Some studies say that this can work as well as some anti-depressants. St John’s wart was usually used between 1993 and 2010. Sometimes this was mixed with other dangerous medicines like anti-depressants, anxiety medications, statins, or oral contraceptives. When St John’s wart is mixed with any antidepressant, it can cause severe problems. St John’s wort can cause other medicines to lose effectiveness. AIDS medications, chemotherapy, birth control pills, and even medicines that prevent organ rejection can be ineffective because of st john’s wort. 


It is essential to have enough calcium in the body. However, too much of it can cause problems. If there isn’t enough vitamin D in the body, then the calcium will not be absorbed into your bones, but it will just remain in your arteries. Instead of a supplement, eating green leafy vegetables and consuming dairy can increase calcium in a regular amount that is necessary because calcium can be absorbed better when it comes from food rather than a supplement. Even six ounces of low-fat yogurt is about one-third of your daily calcium requirement. Chess, milk, and tofu are other sources of calcium that are very good for you to eat. 

Multivitamins And Multi minerals

Many people take multivitamin or multivitamin supplements. Some studies showed that these different multivitamins and minerals did not affect people’s health by consuming these tablets. Some women who took these tablets were more likely to die than those who did not. The multivitamins did not prevent death, cardiovascular diseases, or cancer in any way. Other studies show that these can be useful, and many people should choose to take these vitamins, so there are people on both sides saying different things about multivitamins. 


This is a herb, and it is used to treat things like anxiety disorders. When people have anxiety, they can use it to treat their anxiety instead of prescription medicines. It has been proven that Kava can be very effective in reducing anxiety compared to medicines. If you use Kava for too long, you can get liver damage, cirrhosis, hepatitis, or even liver failure. When people have any liver-related problem, they are told not to take Kava before consulting a doctor because it can cause massive problems for the liver. Too much use of Kava can also lead to eye irritation and heart problems. 


The most important thing that you have to remember is that these are all supplements, and they are supposed to supplement the food and give you the nutrients that you are not getting from your food. You cannot use these supplements as a way to replace all your food with these tablets. Some of these supplements mentioned above are just bad for you, while others are bad if you consume them in large quantities. 

It is best to get all the nutrition you require from whole foods themselves and do not rely on supplements. If you eat a good and balanced diet, you will get every nutrient your body requires. You can still use supplements if you feel that you lack in some area, but if you have to take a high dose of supplements, consult a doctor before you do so.
